Immigrant Mental Health Therapy in Toronto, Ontario

Moving to Toronto means navigating a new city while carrying the weight of displacement, cultural adjustment, and often the weight of others' expectations back home. You're learning transit systems and workplace cultures while grieving what you've left behind. Settlement services can help with practical needs, but the emotional toll of building a life in a foreign place, the loneliness of being perpetually "new," and the pressure to succeed quickly runs deeper than any orientation program addresses.

LK Psychotherapy is here to meet you where you actually are. We're a multilingual, BIPOC-led practice that understands your lived experience isn't background noise to your mental health—it's central to it. Working virtually across Toronto, we don't ask you to translate yourself or minimize your cultural context to fit a clinical mold. Your values, your grief, your resilience, and the specific challenges of being an immigrant in this city all matter from day one.

About This Service in Toronto

Therapy That Holds Your Whole Story, Including Where You Come From

Moving to Toronto brings excitement and opportunity, but also significant emotional strain. Newcomers navigate systemic barriers like credential recognition delays that can leave highly skilled professionals underemployed, cultural isolation as established communities concentrate in specific neighborhoods, and the pressure to appear successful while managing profound displacement. These stressors accumulate quietly, often without recognition or support.

This experience, called acculturation stress, is rarely addressed because seeking help feels impossible. Many immigrant communities carry cultural beliefs that mental health struggles should remain private, while language barriers make finding appropriate care exhausting. Distrust of Western mental health systems runs deep, rooted in real experiences of bias and misunderstanding. By the time someone considers therapy, they're already depleted from simply surviving the transition.

LK Psychotherapy understands that your mental health work involves much more than individual symptoms. Our BIPOC-led clinicians specialize in untangling the intersection of immigration, cultural identity, family expectations across continents, and the grief of displacement. We honor your experience without pathologizing it, creating space where you can process belonging to multiple worlds at once.

Why LK Psychotherapy

Why Immigrants in Toronto Choose LK Psychotherapy

Our founder's own journey as an immigrant in Canada is the foundation of our clinical approach. We are not learning about your experience from a textbook.

Founded by an Immigrant, For Communities Like Yours

LK Psychotherapy was founded by Lethicia Foadjo, an immigrant and MSW RSW whose personal experience shapes a practice built for people whose stories are not the default.

Multilingual and Multi-Faith Aware

Language and faith matter in therapy. Our team brings cultural fluency across multiple languages and an awareness of religious and community contexts that affect how healing happens.

Anti-Oppressive, Not Just Inclusive

We do not just welcome diversity. We actively work against the systems that make it harder for immigrants, racialized people, and newcomers to access quality care and thrive in it.

Acculturation stress refers to the psychological impact of adapting to a new culture, including language pressure, shifting values and norms, loss of community and support networks, discrimination, and the exhaustion of constantly navigating an unfamiliar environment. Research consistently shows that immigrants face higher rates of depression, anxiety, and isolation, particularly in the first years of settlement. LK Psychotherapy takes an affirming, non-stigmatizing approach to working with acculturation stress and the grief of displacement.

Yes. LK Psychotherapy has multilingual clinicians on staff and takes language and cultural background into account when matching clients to their therapist. We understand that doing therapeutic work in a second language adds an additional layer of difficulty and that some concepts do not translate directly across cultures. Please mention your language preference during your free consultation and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Psychotherapy services in Ontario are not covered under OHIP. However, LK Psychotherapy accepts a wide range of third-party insurance plans through direct billing. LK Psychotherapy offers direct billing to Sun Life Financial, GreenShield Insurance, and Medavie Blue Cross (including Canadian Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs).
