Moving to Ottawa brings its own particular weight. You're navigating winter streets, learning new systems, maybe splitting time between here and home. While settlement services help with logistics, the deeper emotional terrain often goes unaddressed: the grief of distance, the pressure to integrate quickly, the exhaustion of code-switching, the complicated feelings about leaving and building simultaneously. These experiences are real and deserve real space to be processed.
LK Psychotherapy was built for exactly this. We're a multilingual, BIPOC-led practice rooted in Ottawa, working virtually so geography doesn't add another barrier. We start from the premise that your cultural identity and lived experience aren't things to work around in therapy; they're the foundation. Your context matters. Your language matters. How you're making sense of this transition in Ottawa, right now, matters.
Moving to Ottawa brings unique mental health challenges that many newcomers navigate quietly. Beyond the practical demands of finding housing in a competitive market, learning new systems, and building professional networks, immigrants often experience profound cultural displacement. Ottawa's tight-knit cultural communities, while offering connection, can also create pressure to maintain traditional family expectations while adapting to Canadian life. The isolation of being far from extended family, combined with underemployment or professional credential recognition barriers, takes a real toll on emotional wellbeing.
Acculturation stress occurs when you're balancing two worlds at once: honoring your heritage while adjusting to unfamiliar social norms, work environments, and ways of relating. Many immigrant communities view mental health struggles as personal weaknesses rather than understandable responses to extraordinary circumstances. Language barriers make it harder to express complex emotions in therapy, and some communities have valid historical reasons for distrusting Western mental health institutions. By the time you're managing jobs, housing, documentation, and family responsibilities, the exhaustion of survival mode leaves little space to acknowledge that you're struggling emotionally.
LK Psychotherapy was built specifically for people navigating these realities. Our BIPOC-led therapists understand acculturation stress firsthand and work with the full complexity of your experience: the identity questions that emerge between cultures, the family obligations that feel heavy, the grief of displacement alongside hope for the future. We meet you in multiple languages and create a space where your mental health care doesn't require you to abandon your cultural values or explain your background repeatedly.
Our founder's own journey as an immigrant in Canada is the foundation of our clinical approach. We are not learning about your experience from a textbook.
LK Psychotherapy was founded by Lethicia Foadjo, an immigrant and MSW RSW whose personal experience shapes a practice built for people whose stories are not the default.
Language and faith matter in therapy. Our team brings cultural fluency across multiple languages and an awareness of religious and community contexts that affect how healing happens.
We do not just welcome diversity. We actively work against the systems that make it harder for immigrants, racialized people, and newcomers to access quality care and thrive in it.

Acculturation stress refers to the psychological impact of adapting to a new culture, including language pressure, shifting values and norms, loss of community and support networks, discrimination, and the exhaustion of constantly navigating an unfamiliar environment. Research consistently shows that immigrants face higher rates of depression, anxiety, and isolation, particularly in the first years of settlement. LK Psychotherapy takes an affirming, non-stigmatizing approach to working with acculturation stress and the grief of displacement.
Yes. LK Psychotherapy has multilingual clinicians on staff and takes language and cultural background into account when matching clients to their therapist. We understand that doing therapeutic work in a second language adds an additional layer of difficulty and that some concepts do not translate directly across cultures. Please mention your language preference during your free consultation and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Psychotherapy services in Ontario are not covered under OHIP. However, LK Psychotherapy accepts a wide range of third-party insurance plans through direct billing. LK Psychotherapy offers direct billing to Sun Life Financial, GreenShield Insurance, and Medavie Blue Cross (including Canadian Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs). We also accept Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) for First Nations and Inuit clients, and over 20 plans through Telus Health eClaims including Canada Life and Desjardins. A sliding scale is available for clients without coverage.
The weight of starting over in a new country is legitimate and worthy of support. LK Psychotherapy understands this journey. We serve Ottawa's immigrant and newcomer communities virtually with a team led by BIPOC therapists who center cultural understanding in every session.
