About This Service in Mississauga

Therapy That Holds Your Whole Story, Including Where You Come From

Moving to Mississapia brings unique mental health challenges. The Greater Toronto Area's diverse immigrant communities, including large South Asian, Chinese, and Latin American populations, often experience pressure to succeed quickly while managing the practical demands of resettlement. Employment barriers, credential recognition struggles, and the concentration of lower-wage service sector jobs can create ongoing financial stress. Additionally, accessing culturally informed mental health services in Mississauga remains difficult, with waitlists at publicly funded clinics stretching months and many providers unfamiliar with immigration-specific experiences.

Acculturation stress describes the psychological toll of navigating two cultures simultaneously: balancing your heritage with Canadian expectations, managing family obligations across distances, and rebuilding identity in a new context. Many immigrants delay seeking help because mental health carries stigma in their home cultures, language barriers make therapy difficult, and past experiences with healthcare systems create understandable distrust. The constant energy required just to survive and settle often leaves little room to address emotional or psychological needs, making it easy for struggles to remain invisible and untreated.

LK Psychotherapy offers culturally responsive care specifically designed for immigrant experiences. Working with a BIPOC-led team means you'll find therapists who understand the intersection of identity, family pressure, and displacement without requiring you to explain your background from scratch. We create space to explore how your values, relationships, and sense of self shift through migration. Rather than viewing your immigration experience as something to move past, we help you integrate it into a coherent sense of who you are becoming.

Why LK Psychotherapy

Why Immigrants in Mississauga Choose LK Psychotherapy

Our founder's own journey as an immigrant in Canada is the foundation of our clinical approach. We are not learning about your experience from a textbook.

Founded by an Immigrant, For Communities Like Yours

LK Psychotherapy was founded by Lethicia Foadjo, an immigrant and MSW RSW whose personal experience shapes a practice built for people whose stories are not the default.

Multilingual and Multi-Faith Aware

Language and faith matter in therapy. Our team brings cultural fluency across multiple languages and an awareness of religious and community contexts that affect how healing happens.

Anti-Oppressive, Not Just Inclusive

We do not just welcome diversity. We actively work against the systems that make it harder for immigrants, racialized people, and newcomers to access quality care and thrive in it.

Acculturation stress refers to the psychological impact of adapting to a new culture, including language pressure, shifting values and norms, loss of community and support networks, discrimination, and the exhaustion of constantly navigating an unfamiliar environment. Research consistently shows that immigrants face higher rates of depression, anxiety, and isolation, particularly in the first years of settlement. LK Psychotherapy takes an affirming, non-stigmatizing approach to working with acculturation stress and the grief of displacement.

Yes. LK Psychotherapy has multilingual clinicians on staff and takes language and cultural background into account when matching clients to their therapist. We understand that doing therapeutic work in a second language adds an additional layer of difficulty and that some concepts do not translate directly across cultures. Please mention your language preference during your free consultation and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Psychotherapy services in Ontario are not covered under OHIP. However, LK Psychotherapy accepts a wide range of third-party insurance plans through direct billing. LK Psychotherapy offers direct billing to Sun Life Financial, GreenShield Insurance, and Medavie Blue Cross (including Canadian Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs).
