Moving to Hamilton brings real weight. You're navigating a new job market, rebuilding your professional identity, staying connected to family across borders, and often juggling multiple languages daily. Even as Hamilton's diverse communities grow stronger, many newcomers find themselves translating more than words—you're constantly adapting, proving yourself, and managing the quiet exhaustion that comes with starting over in an unfamiliar place.
LK Psychotherapy gets this. We're a BIPOC-led practice where therapists speak your language and understand your specific journey. When you work with us, your cultural background and lived experience aren't something to work around or explain away—they're the foundation we build from. We offer virtual sessions for Hamilton clients because healing should be accessible, on your terms.
Moving to Hamilton as an immigrant or newcomer brings unique stressors that go beyond typical life transitions. You may be navigating employment barriers in the local job market while managing financial pressure to support family back home. The concentration of specific cultural communities in certain neighborhoods can sometimes create tight-knit support networks, but also social expectations that make it harder to ask for help. Housing costs, credential recognition challenges, and the emotional weight of leaving behind everything familiar all take a real toll on your mental health.
What you're experiencing is called acculturation stress, and it's completely normal. Yet many immigrant clients never seek support because of interconnected barriers. There's often cultural stigma around mental health in your community, making it feel shameful to admit you're struggling. Language barriers can make it difficult to describe complex emotions in English, and some people understandably distrust Western mental health systems after experiencing discrimination or having different cultural frameworks for understanding wellbeing. When you're in survival mode just managing daily life, therapy can feel like a luxury you can't afford, even when you desperately need it.
LK Psychotherapy understands these realities because we're a BIPOC-led practice committed to cultural responsiveness. We work with the full picture of your experience: the pull between your family's expectations and your own identity, the grief of displacement, and the strength you've already shown just by being here. We don't ask you to abandon your cultural values or fit into a Western framework. Instead, we help you process your journey in a space where your background is an asset, not something to overcome.
Our founder's own journey as an immigrant in Canada is the foundation of our clinical approach. We are not learning about your experience from a textbook.
LK Psychotherapy was founded by Lethicia Foadjo, an immigrant and MSW RSW whose personal experience shapes a practice built for people whose stories are not the default.
Language and faith matter in therapy. Our team brings cultural fluency across multiple languages and an awareness of religious and community contexts that affect how healing happens.
We do not just welcome diversity. We actively work against the systems that make it harder for immigrants, racialized people, and newcomers to access quality care and thrive in it.

Acculturation stress refers to the psychological impact of adapting to a new culture, including language pressure, shifting values and norms, loss of community and support networks, discrimination, and the exhaustion of constantly navigating an unfamiliar environment. Research consistently shows that immigrants face higher rates of depression, anxiety, and isolation, particularly in the first years of settlement. LK Psychotherapy takes an affirming, non-stigmatizing approach to working with acculturation stress and the grief of displacement.
Yes. LK Psychotherapy has multilingual clinicians on staff and takes language and cultural background into account when matching clients to their therapist. We understand that doing therapeutic work in a second language adds an additional layer of difficulty and that some concepts do not translate directly across cultures. Please mention your language preference during your free consultation and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Psychotherapy services in Ontario are not covered under OHIP. However, LK Psychotherapy accepts a wide range of third-party insurance plans through direct billing. LK Psychotherapy offers direct billing to Sun Life Financial, GreenShield Insurance, and Medavie Blue Cross (including Canadian Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs). We also accept Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) for First Nations and Inuit clients, and over 20 plans through Telus Health eClaims including Canada Life and Desjardins. A sliding scale is available for clients without coverage.
The weight of starting over in a new country is legitimate, and you don't have to carry it alone.
